BaZi Compatibility: What Comparing Two Charts Can Tell You
Last updated: October 22, 2026
BaZi compatibility compares features of two Four Pillars charts, the stem–branch pairs assigned to birth year, month, day and hour. It offers a traditional symbolic framework for discussing a relationship. A chart comparison does not establish whether two people communicate well, respect each other or want the same life.12
If the question is “Are we compatible?”, make it more specific: compatible in daily routines, communication, expectations or longer-term plans? Those questions need input from both people. If a chart label is causing concern, locate it and check the rule behind it before treating its translation as a relationship verdict.
A zodiac match uses much less information
The familiar birth-year zodiac animal corresponds to one Earthly Branch, the lower character in the year pillar. The popular zodiac usually changes at Chinese New Year, the year pillar at Li Chun, so they can differ for births in between (for example, a birth on February 9, 2024 has the Jia-Chen Dragon year pillar after Li Chun while the popular zodiac remains Rabbit until Chinese New Year; see Ben Ming Nian (本命年): Zodiac Year Meaning, Dates and Traditions). Full BaZi includes four stems and four branches. Matching only two animals leaves most of both charts unexamined.1
More fields allow a more detailed symbolic comparison. They do not, by themselves, demonstrate better predictive accuracy.
Keep two separate sets of inputs
For each chart, record the birth date, calendar system, local time, birthplace and any uncertainty. Use the same calculation conventions when comparing them. Discuss the use of birth details with the people concerned; a relationship question is not a reason to collect someone else's private information without their knowledge.
If either birth time is missing, mark the hour pillar as unresolved. Depending on the date and boundary convention, uncertainty can extend beyond the hour. Avoid presenting an assumed time as recorded fact.
What does a traditional comparison examine?
| Comparison | What to identify | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Day Masters | The day stems and their element relationships | Fixed personality types or a guaranteed match |
| Element patterns | Seasonal context and support within each chart | That one person “completes” the other |
| Day branches | The branches under the day stems, often called spouse palaces | A person's appearance or a marriage outcome |
| Combinations and clashes | Named relationships between particular stems or branches | Actual agreement, conflict or separation |
Combination and clash are technical names for relationships in the traditional system. Classical texts discuss conditions around them; translating them directly into “love” and “breakup” skips the interpretation.2
These comparison prompts are an editorial framework for reading the terminology, not a standardized compatibility test.
Do not merge the two lives into one score
Keep each natal chart, or birth chart, distinct. If a reading includes Luck Pillars, the approximately ten-year periods, or annual influences, identify whose timeline is being discussed.2
The classical sources cited here do not establish a universal percentage threshold for relationship success. If a website displays a score, ask what it counts and what evidence connects that score to its claim. A number without that explanation is not a shared standard.
A useful conversation can stay concrete: Which expectations have actually been discussed? Which disagreements recur? What do both people want to understand? These are reflection questions, not facts inferred from a chart.
What Xiaodao currently offers
Xiaodao's public report guide lists a Love, Family and Relationships chapter for an individual profile. Inside a Bazi Report (and the free Sample report) can therefore lead to that chart's relationship discussion, subject to profile and report eligibility (generating a report requires Xuan-tier Daoyou or above and uses Dao Points; see Membership & Dao Points for pricing).3
The documented follow-up flow in Using Bazi Q&A (which requires Xuan-tier Daoyou or above and uses Dao Points; see Membership & Dao Points for pricing) uses preset topics (such as "Relationships and interactions") and time ranges based on that individual report.4 These guides do not describe a two-person compatibility calculator. Two separate reports should not be presented as a combined score or a verified prediction about the relationship.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Spouse Palace (fu qi gong) is the Earthly Branch of the Day Pillar, sitting directly beneath the Day Master (the Day Heavenly Stem). In traditional chart reading, both the Day Master and the Day Branch are examined when discussing relationship dynamics.
No. Combination (he) and clash (chong) are technical terms for stem and branch relationships in the traditional system. Classical texts examine seasonal and chart-wide conditions around them; translating a clash directly into "breakup" skips the interpretation and ignores how two people actually communicate.
No. Xiaodao does not merge two charts into a single percentage score. Instead, an individual 11-chapter Bazi Report includes Chapter 8 (Love, Family and Relationships), and Bazi Q&A (for Xuan-tier Daoyou or above) allows structured follow-ups on "Relationships and interactions" based on that report.34
