Born on a Solar Term Boundary: Which Solar Term Do You Count Back to When Reversing Da Yun?
Last updated: October 22, 2026
When a birth falls on the exact calendar day of a month-changing Solar Term (Jie)—such as Li Chun, Jing Zhe, Qing Ming, or Li Qiu—the Month Pillar depends on whether the birth occurred before or after the exact astronomical transition minute on that day.12
If the birth occurred after the transition minute (meaning the chart has already entered the new Month Pillar) and the chart requires reverse Luck Pillar progression (Yin-year Male or Yang-year Female), you must count backward to the Solar Term transition that occurred earlier that same day—not to the previous month's Solar Term.1 Skipping the same-day transition by mistake inflates a few hours into roughly 30 days, shifting the calculated Luck Pillar starting age by nearly ten years.
Only the 12 Jie (Sectional Solar Terms) Switch the Month Pillar
The traditional solar calendar contains 24 Solar Terms, alternating between twelve Jie (Sectional Terms) that start a new solar month and twelve Qi (Mid-Terms, including the equinoxes and solstices) that fall in the middle of a solar month. In BaZi, only the twelve Jie terms switch the Month Pillar and anchor Luck Pillar starting-age calculations:12
| Month Branch | Month-Starting Jie Solar Term (Approx. Gregorian Date) | Mid-Month Qi Term (Does Not Change Month Pillar) | Boundary Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yin (1st Month) | Li Chun / Spring Commences (~Feb 4) | Yu Shui (~Feb 19) | Switches both the Year Pillar and Month Pillar |
| Mao (2nd Month) | Jing Zhe / Awakening of Insects (~Mar 5) | Vernal Equinox / Chun Fen (~Mar 20) | Starts the Mao month |
| Chen (3rd Month) | Qing Ming / Clear and Bright (~Apr 5) | Gu Yu (~Apr 20) | Starts the Chen month |
| Si (4th Month) | Li Xia / Summer Commences (~May 5) | Xiao Man (~May 21) | Starts the Si month |
| Wu (5th Month) | Mang Zhong / Grain in Ear (~Jun 6) | Summer Solstice / Xia Zhi (~Jun 21) | Starts the Wu month |
| Wei (6th Month) | Xiao Shu / Slight Heat (~Jul 7) | Da Shu (~Jul 23) | Starts the Wei month |
| Shen (7th Month) | Li Qiu / Autumn Commences (~Aug 7) | Chu Shu (~Aug 23) | Starts the Shen month |
| You (8th Month) | Bai Lu / White Dew (~Sep 7) | Autumnal Equinox / Qiu Fen (~Sep 23) | Starts the You month |
| Xu (9th Month) | Han Lu / Cold Dew (~Oct 8) | Shuang Jiang (~Oct 23) | Starts the Xu month |
| Hai (10th Month) | Li Dong / Winter Commences (~Nov 7) | Xiao Xue (~Nov 22) | Starts the Hai month |
| Zi (11th Month) | Da Xue / Great Snow (~Dec 7) | Winter Solstice / Dong Zhi (~Dec 22) | Starts the Zi month |
| Chou (12th Month) | Xiao Han / Slight Cold (~Jan 5) | Da Han (~Jan 20) | Starts the Chou month |
Worked Comparison: Why Reverse Counting on a Solar Term Day Often Goes Wrong
Under classical Luck Pillar starting-age rules, forward charts (Yang-year Male, Yin-year Female) count forward to the next upcoming Jie term, while reverse charts (Yin-year Male, Yang-year Female) count backward to the most recently passed Jie term (3 days = 1 year, 1 day = 4 months, 2 hours = 10 days).1
Now consider a person born on Qing Ming day (say, April 4) in a year when the Qing Ming transition occurs at 09:00 AM, and whose chart requires reverse progression:
| Birth Scenario on Qing Ming Day (09:00 AM Transition, Reverse Progression) | Natal Month Branch | Which Jie Solar Term Do You Count Back To? | Time Interval | Resulting Luck Pillar Starting Age |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scenario A: Born at 15:00 (3:00 PM), after the 09:00 AM transition | Chen Month (new month has begun) | Count back to 09:00 AM Qing Ming that same morning (the Jie term that started the current Chen month) | 6 hours (3 shichen) | 3 shichen = 30 days (~1 month); first Luck Pillar begins within the first year of life (Age 0–1) |
| Scenario B: Born at 03:00 (3:00 AM), before the 09:00 AM transition | Mao Month (still in the previous solar month) | Count back to Jing Zhe (~March 5) from the previous month (because Qing Ming has not yet arrived at 03:00 AM) | ~30 days | 30 days ÷ 3 = ~10 years; first Luck Pillar begins around Age 10 |
| Common Error on Scenario A (Skipping Same-Day Qing Ming) | Cast as Chen Month (post-transition) | Mistakenly skips the 09:00 AM Qing Ming transition and counts all the way back to Jing Zhe (~March 5) | Falsely treats 6 hours as ~30 days + 6 hours | Shifts the starting age from Age 0–1 to Age 10—an error of nearly ten years across every Luck Pillar |
General-purpose chat models that calculate BaZi without an exact astronomical transition timestamp frequently make this exact error on solar-term birth dates—assigning the new Month Pillar by date while subtracting the previous month's solar-term date when reversing Da Yun. Whenever a birth falls on or near a Solar Term date, we recommend checking the chart with a calculator that tracks exact transition minutes.
How Xiaodao Handles Solar Term Boundary Births
- Global Astronomical Instant for Year and Month Pillars: The Year and Month Pillars switch at the astronomical instant of the Solar Term, which does not vary with birthplace longitude (whereas the Day and Hour Pillars use birthplace True Solar Time after adjusting for Daylight Saving Time).2
- Interactive Boundary Prompt: According to Xiaodao's public FAQ, whenever an entered birth time lands close to a Solar Term transition (or a two-hour branch or day boundary), the page pops up a choice so you can confirm which side of the boundary to cast.3
Frequently Asked Questions
Because Li Chun starts both the new BaZi solar year and the first solar month (Yin month; see Ben Ming Nian guide), crossing the Li Chun instant changes both the Year Pillar and the Month Pillar—and because the Year Stem flips between Yang and Yin, it also reverses whether the ten-year Luck Pillars run forward or backward. Xiaodao pops up a choice near Li Chun so you can confirm which side of the boundary to cast.3
No. A Solar Term marks the instant Earth reaches a specific ecliptic longitude around the Sun (a single global moment in UTC). Xiaodao converts your recorded local birth time (including historical time zone and DST) to compare against that astronomical transition instant for the Year and Month Pillars, while using local True Solar Time for the Day and Hour Pillars.2
