Day Master Calculator Guide: Find the Day Stem in a BaZi Chart
Last updated: October 22, 2026
To find a Day Master, locate the day column in a BaZi chart and read its upper character, the Heavenly Stem. That stem is the chart's reference point. It is not the animal in the year column, the whole Day Pillar, or whichever element appears most often.12
This page explains how to identify a calculator's result and how the ten stems are classified. To calculate a chart from birth details, use Xiaodao's BaZi Calculator.
What information should go into the calculator?
Prepare the recorded birth date, its calendar system, the local clock time and the birthplace. A time zone supplies the offset between local time and Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC. Historical daylight-saving rules may change that offset; today's setting is not necessarily the setting at birth.3
Use Cast a Bazi chart to preview a chart or create an eligible profile and inspect the resulting chart. Creating a profile requires an account. Xiaodao requests birth time to the minute and describes using true solar time, a location-based solar-time adjustment for the Day and Hour Pillars.4
Before identifying anything, read the chart's column headings. The day column may be displayed on either side of the center.
The ten possible Day Masters
The stems alternate between yang and yin, the paired polarities used in this traditional classification. These words do not mean a person's sex or a personality score. Each pair belongs to one of the five elements.2
| Day stem | Name | Element and polarity |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 | Jia | Yang Wood |
| 乙 | Yi | Yin Wood |
| 丙 | Bing | Yang Fire |
| 丁 | Ding | Yin Fire |
| 戊 | Wu | Yang Earth |
| 己 | Ji | Yin Earth |
| 庚 | Geng | Yang Metal |
| 辛 | Xin | Yin Metal |
| 壬 | Ren | Yang Water |
| 癸 | Gui | Yin Water |
Does the birth hour change the Day Master?
The Day Master comes from the day stem, not the hour stem. However, uncertainty around a day boundary can affect which day is used. A clock-time correction can also move a recorded time across a boundary. Ask which day-change convention the calculator applies instead of assuming all calculators treat late-night births identically.
Xiaodao's FAQ says that a profile near a traditional-hour, day or solar-term boundary receives a choice prompt so you can confirm which side of the boundary to cast.4 If the recorded time is uncertain, keep that uncertainty attached to the result.
Three labels that are easy to mix up
| Label | What it identifies |
|---|---|
| Day Master | The stem of the birth day |
| Day Pillar | The day's stem and branch together |
| Birth-year zodiac animal | The animal of the birth year in the popular zodiac; it usually changes at Chinese New Year, while the year branch changes at Li Chun (for example, a birth on 2024-02-09 has the Jia-Chen Dragon year pillar after Li Chun while the popular zodiac remains Rabbit until Chinese New Year) |
These are different fields, even when a chart's graphic gives one more visual emphasis than another.12 An element total is a fourth question: counting several Water symbols does not turn a Jia day stem into a Water Day Master.
Once the stem is confirmed, use the table above as a reference glossary. A fuller reading still needs the other pillars, seasonal context and the method used to interpret them (see How to Read a BaZi Chart). For a missing or approximate birth time, our unknown-birth-time guide (coming soon) discusses how boundary uncertainty is handled.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The popular birth-year zodiac animal usually changes at Chinese New Year, and the BaZi Year Branch changes at Li Chun (~February 4). The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar, which cycles through the ten stems (Jia through Gui) every ten days and serves as the reference point of the chart.
Although the Day Master sits in the Day Pillar, births near midnight or during the Zi hour (23:00–01:00) can cross the day boundary once adjusted for local True Solar Time and historical Daylight Saving Time. When a birth falls near a boundary, Xiaodao pops up a choice so you can confirm which side of the boundary to cast.4
Visitors can preview a chart without signing in to see the four natal pillars and identify the Day Master; creating and saving a profile in your account requires signing in.4
